Wedging a pair of wooden shoes

Wedges
and filling piecesBefore the wooden shoe maker starts with boring the holes, both wooden shoes need to be fastened in the "boring bench". This fastening needs some handiness because the wooden shoes should not fall out of the bench. The wooden shoe maker uses some wedges and filling pieces as shown in the right figure.

The filling piece

Photo 23 shows that the first filling piece is placed in-between both wooden shoes. Therefore this particular piece has a very characteristic shape.

                bench

The space that's still left outside of the pair of wooden shoes is filled with rectangular filling pieces or little blocks. Then everything is fastened very tightly with a final wedge (photo 24). The wooden shoe maker has both his hands free now for boring.
